Fish Medications as Part of Aquarium Maintenance
If you want your fishkeeping hobby to become truly enjoyable, make sure that the living inhabitants of your aquarium are always at their best health condition. To do this, you should observe good practices for aquarium maintenance on a regular basis.
On keeping the fish tank healthy
Fish in the aquarium can get sick due to a number of reasons such as improper water conditions. This is why part of good aquarium maintenance is to always check on the water conditions of your tank. Vital water parameters include pH, temperature, nitrites, and nitrates, among others. For marine fish tank setups, water salinity is very important too. When there is stress in the aquarium, the immunity of the fish also weakens. If there is one sick or injured fish in your tank, the other healthy fish might get infected too. This is why part of good maintenance is to apply immediate and proper fish medications should the need arise.
Treating the sick fish
Try to observe your fish everyday. Check if there are changes in their color, eyes, and fins. Observe their appetite and activities. Any change in their behavior might be an indication of an ailment that needs to be addressed immediately.
There are fish medications that you can directly apply to your fish tank to treat the ailing fish. These are less potent though, that’s why it’s okay to expose the other healthy fish too. But in some cases, it is more advisable to isolate the sick or injured fish in a quarantine tank or “hospital” tank. Your hospital tank should not contain any substrate or live plant. You can quarantine the sick fish for a few weeks before putting them back to your display tank. If you put a prime on aquarium maintenance, you will have a hassle-free fishkeeping hobby.
